INSTRUCTIONS - SPLICING BUNDLES

1. CUT AN OPENING Cut an opening in the microduct using the Melbye Cable Stripping Knife.

2. SLICE ALONG THE MICRODUCT Make a slice along the length of microduct using the Melbye Rachetting Duct and Cable Slitter.

3. PULL OUT INNER MICRODUCT Pull out a loop of microduct.

4. CREATE SOME SLACK Use the Melbye Cable Stripping Knife to pull out enough microduct to insert the Melbye Plastic Pipe Cutter underneath.

5. MAKE A CLEAN CUT Use the Melbye Plastic Tube Cutter 3-12mm (1649192) or the Melbye Tube Cutter in Steel 12-25mm (1662506) to cleanly cut the microduct.

PUSH TO FIT

6. CONNECT THE MICRODUCT

Use a coupler to connect the two microducts together. Push firmly to fit.

PULL TO CHECK

7. CHECK CONNECTION Pull each duct away from the coupler to check the fit is correct.

WARNING MESH - TRACING WIRE

In all trenches with a microduct, a tracing wire that follows the microduct must also be laid along the ditch bottom. If the microduct is terminated in ground, it is also recommended that a listening ball/search ball be laid down.

Where microducts or cables have been buried, cable marking must be used.

In all main routes, tracing wire and warning mesh should be laid together with microduct and cables.

INSTRUCTIONS - HOW TO

For optimal blowing conditions - Microduct must be laid without sharp bends.

MOLE PLOUGHING MICRODUCT

Ploughing microduct can be an effective alternative to open trenches. Instead of digging, laying and backfilling, the microduct are ploughed down and pulled through the ground. There are the same requirements for cover, cable marking, cable protection and distance between cables when ploughing as when digging a ditch.

INSTRUCTIONS - CLEANING & LUBRICATING

It is very important to clean the microduct before you start fibre blowing so that it is free of dirt, water and moisture. Cleaning in advance will achieve a smoother installation and can save you unnecessary costs and time.

To clean the microduct, sponges must be blown through:

1. Place one or more sponges into the microduct. 2. Apply air pressure and blow the sponge through. 3. Check that the sponge is clean when it exits the other end. To considerably increase the blowing distance, sponges can also be used to smooth out the lubricant before you start blowing. Refer to the lubricant’s packaging to ensure that you use a lubricant that is suitable for the microduct dimension and length to be blown.

Melbye offers highly flexible and user-friendly cable trailers with different configurations. The trailers can be used for transporting drums, but also for laying cables, stringing overhead lines and retracting old cables and lines. We offer 3 different models: JKS1500, JKS2500 and JKS3500. The JKS1500 is the smallest one and is a manual / mechanical trailer. JKS2500 and JKS3500 are equially equipped with a hydraulic circuit driven by a Honda 13hP engine. The difference is the loading capacity.

DRUMS

All our microducts are delivered on wooden drums with tight walls.

The drums vary in size depending on microduct diameter, bundling, and number of metres of tube per drum. If you want to know the measurements, whether it should be height, width, weight, centre hole diameter, etc., contact us – our expertise is always included. Correct handling of cable drums reduces accidental damage to cable, material and personnel. All fibre cables are sensitive to damage during handling, storage and installation. Such damage can impair cable performance, and in the worst case, lead to fibre breakage. The damage can occur under the cable’s outer sheath, and will not be visible. Improper handling can also create ”stress” in the fibre, which can cause fibre breakage during unwinding.

INSTRUCTIONS - HANDLING & TRANSPORT

Lifting of cable drum When lifting the drum, it is important to use a lifting yoke. If lifting yokes are not used, the rope/chain can damage the drum’s flanges, which in turn can cause cable damage. Handling with forklift Keep the drum in an upright position. The drum is designed to be handled in an upright position, to ensure that the cable layers do not get tangled when unwound. Note: Always store and move the drums in an upright position. Under no circumstances, must the drums be stored lying on their side. Rolling of cable drum To ensure the cable remains correctly wound, only roll the drum in the marked direction. Drum transport, unloading and storage 1. Drums must always be transported standing on racks. If the drums are on the flange, the cable pressure/weight can cause damage to the fibre and/or microduct and can result in fibre breakage. Drums must always be tied with a chain or belt, and wooden blocks placed between the racks, during transport. 2. Whilst unloading from the truck, it is important that the drum is not dropped. The weight of the drum and cable can cause deflection of the flange and lead to damage of the cable. Drums must be rolled from the truck to the platform, which must be at the same height as the tailgate of the truck. An alternative, is to use a forklift. 3. The drum must always be stored in an upright position. Storage of drums in an alternative position may cause winding errors. 4. If storage space is limited, it is advised that only drums with a diameter of up to 1250mm should be stored on their side. 5. Wooden drums should be stored indoors. If drums are stored outside, the storage surface should be firm with no moist soil in contact with the wood. Protect the cable against UV light/sunlight by keeping the coating on, until it is ready to be used.
